Infrastructure
DIRECTV transmits corporate
communications using high-power
satellites built by Hughes Space
and Communications.
Our corporate customers can
provide content to DIRECTV
broadcasts centers via
satellite, fiber optic cable or
special digital tape to be
distributed for private network
use to various geographic
locations. The programming is
digitized, encrypted and
uplinked to satellites in
geosynchronous orbit 22,300
miles above the earth, and then
retransmitted to the satellite
receiver dish installed at each
location.
The DIRECTV System
The DIRECTV System consists
of a small satellite dish
antenna, an integrated
receiver/decoder (IRD) set-top
box and a remote control. The
IRD component decompresses and
translates digital signals for
viewing on an analog television
monitor and separates each
channel of programming. Our
private network users normally
use one channel for corporate
broadcasts.
